If you were a customer of AT&T and fell behind on your bills, chances are good that you've heard from Palisades Collections. The same holds true if your Nissan was repossessed, or if you have an old debt with Citi Bank. That's because Palisades LLC is a subsidiary of Asta Funding, which buys old debts for pennies on the dollar. Then, Palisades Collections tries to collect – sometimes even if the debt is beyond the statute of limitations and is therefore considered a time-barred debt.

How Palisades Collection LLC tries to collect is another story. In a 2010 investigative article, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune listed Palisades Collections among the ten most litigious debt buyers. The Star-Tribune reporters discovered that the debt buyers who filed the most lawsuits in Minnesota raked in over $223 million in court judgments between 2005 and 2009. Multiply that by all 50 states, and you begin to get an idea of just how big the debt buying business is.

Palisades Collection Complaints

The Better Business Bureau has logged an astounding number of Palisades Collection complaints, yet still gives the debt collection agency an A+ rating. As of July 2012, the BBB notes 243 closed Palisades LLC complaints over the past three years, including 92 within the past 12 months. In addition, there were 25 Palisades LLC lawsuits filed in federal court during the first half of 2012 for alleged violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Stop Palisades Collections Calls

It may be little comfort, but if you've been harassed by Palisades Collections, you're not alone. The Great Recession has put the squeeze on everyone, and an increasing number of consumers are having problems meeting their everyday living expenses. Sudden illness or hospitalization, job loss, or emergency car repairs may have forced you to make difficult financial choices. As a result, you - like many Americans - may have gotten behind in your payments. Ever since the country's cash flow dried up seemingly overnight, debt collection agencies – whether Palisades LLC or any other – have become increasingly aggressive, sometimes even using intimidation and harassment to get people to part with every last dollar they have.

If you want to stop Palisades Collections calls, you will likely have to take action. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) provides protection for consumers who are hounded by debt collection agencies. The FDCPA says that you can sue a debt collection agency like Palisades Collection, and that if you win, you are entitled to receive actual financial damages, additional damages up to $1,000, court costs, and attorney's fees. That means that attorneys who specialize in debt collection abuse cases typically won't charge you a dime, and instead will collect their fees from the debt collection agency.
