Consumer Recovery Associates, which was founded in 2004, is a collection agency that has offices in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Greenville, South Carolina. The agency collects on all kinds of debt, and offers a host of services to its clients, such as skip-tracing, predictive dialing, third-party collections, a network of attorneys and pre-collection services. On their website Consumer Recovery Associates boasts that they are able to track consumers across state lines and that they work with the nation’s largest credit grantors and debt purchasers. It’s believed that the agency also operates under the names IA and Associates, CC Associates, Consumer Credit Association, Court Company, CR Associates, C&R Associates, C & R Associates, Farm CIA & Associates and J Lamb and Associates.

Consumer Recovery Associates has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, which is surprising since it has had 31 complaints lodged against it in the past three years, and only 16 of those have been resolved.

Stop Consumer Recovery Associates Harassment

The guidelines set forth the in the FDCPA were put in place to protect consumers from debt collection agencies that would harass or mistreat them. For example, a debt collector can’t tell a neighbor that the consumer had given him permission to share his personal information with them. In fact, the FDCPA limits debt collection agencies from talking to anyone about the debt (except for spouses in some states and the consumer’s attorney). In an effort to find someone, the agency may make one phone call, but not reveal that they are with a collection agency, and unless the person invites them to do so, they may not call again.

What’s more, a collection agency is not allowed to make threats of physical violence, or any other type of action that they don’t fully intend to carry out—and only then if it’s permissible by law. They are not allowed to threaten you or harass you in an attempt to collect a debt—even if you owe it.

If you’ve been harassed by a debt collection agency, you should know that you have rights. You can report them to the BBB, and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. What’s more, if they are in flagrant violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you can file suit against them, and if you win, you could be awarded up to $1,000 in damages, plus your attorney’s fees and court costs.
