You are protected from debt collection abuse by the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), but you also might have recourse under state law. While some states don’t have separate laws protecting their residents from unethical debt collector behavior, others do. Many states’ laws have provisions that are closely aligned with the FDCPA.
If you live in a state with consumer protections against debt collection agency abuse, you may be able to sue under both state and federal law.
